Critical Thinkers Book Club
Aug. 28:Theodore Roosevelt for the Defense: The Courtroom Battle To Save His Legacy,by Dan Abrams. In 1915, former President Theodore Roosevelt was sued for libel by William Barnes, a power "boss" of the Republican National Committee. The six-week trial exposed politics of corruption and self-interest -- the politics against which Roosevelt had fought throughout his career. The issue at stake was whether voters should be allowed to vote directly for their U.S. senators or continue to defer to the State legislatures, which was the original practice. More than 100 witnesses took the stand, including a dramatic appearance by the former president himself. The book raises the question: in our politics, how much has changed?
